Welcome letter

Program Director Welcome
Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at HCA Kingwood Medical Center (KMC). We are a new ACGME program with an academic affiliation to the University of Houston. KMC is part of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), which is the largest GME community in the United States with more than 200 residency programs bringing experience and collaboration to our program.

I am an Internal Medicine physician with a passion for graduate medical education. I have been involved in graduate medical education for the last twenty-three years with the last ten years being in the lovely state of Texas. I did my residency program at William Beaumont Army Medical Center and had the pleasure to work in several academic and community hospitals. I am part of the Hospitalist teaching team in KMC where we care as family.

Our program offers a comprehensive Internal Medicine curriculum based on the IM Board blueprint. Our residents have access to Decker Weekly Curriculum software that provides reading and testing material. We partner with Hope Clinic to bring great educational experience in the ambulatory setting, which consists of a 4+1 system, one week of clinic following by four weeks of inpatient or elective rotation. We have all subspecialty rotations in our hospital for your convenience. No fellowship, so you have first-hand access to cases and procedures.

HCA at Kingwood is nestled in a wonderful Houston community (the livable forest) with many Texas outdoor activities such as rolling golf courses and beautiful lakes. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is only 10 minutes from the hospital. Our partnership with the University of Houston makes it possible for you to enjoy all the sports activities that are associated with this well-known campus. Most importantly, our close proximity to UH College of Medicine and other medical schools, opens the door for HCA Kingwood to provide educational support to many local future residents.

I hope that you consider Kingwood Medical Center as your next training experience. Please, contact us for any questions.

HCA Houston Healthcare/University of Houston College of Medicine Consortium is proud to offer the Internal Medicine Residency Program, a newly ACGME accredited three-year program accepting 25 residents per year.

Our residency program is offered at HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood, a full-service, acute care hospital located 20 miles from downtown. HCA Houston Kingwood has provided the northeast Houston community with high-quality, cost-effective healthcare for over 25 years.

The internal medicine program is structured as a 4+1 academic year, where residents participate in four weeks of clinical care to an assigned rotation followed by one full week in the continuity clinic. Residents learn to develop the skills needed to educate others in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. In the outpatient setting, supervising faculty initially role model teaching skills when interacting with patients and will ask the resident to demonstrate their teaching skills while the faculty directly observe and provide immediate feedback.

Residents have access to both inpatient and outpatient facilities, clinics and ambulatory centers. In the Internal Medicine Continuity Clinic residents have access to a wide range of patients with different etiologies and chronic conditions.

Internal Medicine Residency Program Highlights

Simulation center: The internal medicine residency program provides residents with access to a fully developed and technically designed simulation center through the University of Houston. Residents will participate in simulation sessions that focus on internal medicine procedures, code blues, mock patient encounters, and other medical procedures and emergencies commonly seen by internal medicine physicians. All experiences in the simulation center will be monitored by faculty members and evaluations will be completed and reviewed by the program director and residents.

University of Houston academic partnership: Our academic partner, The University of Houston is a Tier 1 University with multiple recognitions in several disciplines, research, community outreach/leadership, and innovation. The HCA Houston Healthcare/University of Houston College of Medicine Consortium offers tailored curricula to make our residents the best practitioners in their respective field. Our wealth of expertise and resources provide residents with a personalized, innovative evidence-based training; allowing us to champion the practice of medicine for a healthier world.

HCA Healthcare affiliation: Upon completion of an HCA Healthcare residency or fellowship, physician trainees will have received an innovative, high-quality experience and have access to employment opportunities at HCA Healthcare facilities across the country. With more than 200 residency programs and 4,000 residents in training, HCA Healthcare is host to the largest GME network in the country; allowing us to turn residents into practitioners in the communities that we serve.
