Program Curriculum
Our ACGME-accredited, three-year program is offered at HCA Houston Healthcare West and boasts a relationship with Hope Clinic, our outpatient continuity clinic, as well an academic relationship with the University of Houston College of Medicine.

NOTES
Elective Rotations(include but not limited to): Endocrinology, Outpatient Pediatrics, Surgery, Infectious Disease, Family Medicine, Neurology, Inpatient Pediatrics, Critical Care, Radiology, Anesthesiology, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Sleep Medicine, ENT, Neuro-ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Inpatient Medicine, Emergency room, Nursery/NICU, Dermatology, Sports Medicine, Orthopedics, Urology, Podiatry, Nephrology, Gastroenterology.
Advocacy/Leadership: Structured time to learn about political representation for AAFP, TAFP, TMA, AMA. Rotation includes taking advocacy training, advocacy course modules, research project, leadership training, lobbying training, writing to congress, attending virtual meetings with legislators, attending advocacy meetings, meeting with legislators for family medicine education or clinical practice issues. Resident is expected sign up and participate in state/regional/national advocacy groups and committees.
FMM: Family Medicine Month –Intro to Family Medicine. This rotation serves as an orientation block and includes lectures, OSCEs, interactive sessions, life support courses, board review, EMR training, simulation training, continuity clinic, time in inpatient service/ICU/ER, time for scholarly activity and research, and online modules. Residents meet with chief residents, upper levels, advisors, mentors, core faculty, facility and clinic leadership, and participate in Wellness/Team building.
Nursing Home: experience will be longitudinal as well as during the geriatric rotation. Each resident is assigned 2-3 patients.
PTO/Vacations: Residents may take 1 week vacation in any block except the following: IM, ICU,FMM, OB, Inpatient Pediatrics, and Nursery/NICU. Vacations during the 2 week rotations are on a case/case basis at the discretion of the program director.
Practice Management: Residents learn about billing/coding, US healthcare system, setting up a practice, interviewing, contract negotiation, employment options, malpractice, efficiency of a practice, burnout/wellness, and legal issues. Residents spend time with various leaders from the facility, clinic, as well as CEOs, CFOs, financial advisors, insurance agents, and various FM physicians from different types of practice (academic, direct primary care, integrative medicine, solo practice, employed model). There is a structured rotation in PGY2 in addition to the longitudinal curriculum which involves didactics as well as interactive sessions with marketing team/core faculty/financial companies.
Community Medicine: Residents spend time with leaders from various organizations both locally and nationally. Residents spend time with outreach teams from the clinic and facility as well. Residents learn about the various organizations that can help the patients they serve. Residents also learn about the organizations ‘mission, community impact, funding, as well as opportunities for volunteerism. Residents spend time with case managers, care coordinators, social workers, and ancillary staff.
