Affecting around 30 to 35 million Americans, sinusitis is one of the most common complaints among ENT patients. Sinusitis happens when the lining of your sinuses becomes inflamed. Your sinuses routinely drain through the small openings in the nose, but when there is a blockage, a buildup of mucus occurs, causing potentially infectious inflammation. There are two types of sinusitis—acute and chronic.
- Acute sinusitis—happens suddenly and can be cured quickly with medication
- Chronic sinusitis—occurs frequently or lasts more than three months
Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat patients with chronic sinusitis. The procedure restructures previously blocked nasal passage, which maintains the structural integrity of the sinus lining and restores normal sinus drainage and function. It is performed on an outpatient basis, so patients can resume their normal schedule in one day.
