Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)

At HCA Houston Healthcare, we understand that some newborns require specialized care. Our NICU staff are capable of caring for babies that are born prematurely and those who need advanced monitoring and/or additional supervision. NICU care and services are offered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Knowing your child requires care in one of our hospital NICUs can be stressful, but you can take comfort in knowing HCA Houston employs expert physicians, in all specialties, to provide the best care for your newborn.

There are a number of different reasons that your child may need to be admitted into the NICU. Along with prematurity and low birth weight, some common reasons include:

  • Respiratory problems
  • Infectious diseases
  • Nutritional deficits
  • Birth defects
  • Jaundice
  • Seizures

NICU services

HCA Houston Healthcare ensures your child receives the care they need. We employ multidisciplinary NICU staff members, including neonatologists and neonatal nursing staff.

By choosing HCA Houston, your baby will have access to advanced NICU options. Our network of hospitals offers Level II, Level III and Level IV NICU care for infants.

The Level II NICU is for infants who require an intermediate level of care following birth. Level II NICU accommodations are ideal for newborns who have graduated from Level III NICU care and those who were born closer to their due date, but require less intensive care. Level II NICU care includes:

  • Heart rate monitoring
  • Respiratory rate monitoring
  • Blood pressure and temperature monitoring
  • Nutrition provided through IV, tube feeding, bottle feeding or breastfeeding
  • Radiant warmers, incubators and open cribs

Level III NICU care is reserved for infants who require intensive care and who are typically born before the 30th week of gestation. Our Level III NICU offers:

  • Constant monitoring of heart rate, respiratory rates, temperature and blood pressure
  • Assistance in breathing, either using a ventilator or other oxygenation methods
  • Flat, open beds
  • Overhead warmers or incubators

At The Woman's Hospital of Texas, our Level IV NICU allows us to offer the highest level of care available for newborns who are premature, critically-ill, or have a life threatening health condition. In addition, the Woman's Hospital provide 24/7 emergency transport care for premature or sick babies in need of the highest level of NICU care.
