Pharmacy residency program at Kingwood

The pharmacy residency programs at HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood offer our residents the ability to learn, grow, and develop in the largest full-service, acute-care, teaching facility within the HCA Houston Healthcare hospital system.

As part of our comprehensive pharmacy residency programs, each resident will gain unique exposure to high-quality patient-centered care, medication safety, facility and division leadership and practice management, project management, quality and regulatory projects and education of healthcare providers and trainees.

• PGY1/PGY2/Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency with Masters

The current Graduate Medical Education (GME) General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Surgery, and Podiatry Residencies are an academic partnership with the University of Houston College of Medicine, which was established in 2020. It is just the start of an ever-expanding higher education collaboration between our two powerhouses.

Our clinical pharmacist team has an integral impact working in tandem with our physicians in our Antimicrobial Management Program, with pharmacists encouraged to become certified by the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists Antimicrobial Stewardship Certificate. As a result of our efforts, our institution has been designated by the Infectious Diseases Society of America as a Center of Excellence that delivers consistently high-quality care and serves as the gold standard for executing novel Antimicrobial Stewardship principles.

Additionally, HCA Houston Kingwood is equipped with a Level III Trauma Center, an Accredited Chest Pain Center, Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and is accredited by DNV - Healthcare as the only Comprehensive Stroke Center in Northeast Houston. HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood offers a 12-month PGY1 Pharmacy residency program. The purpose of the program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for the medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, who are eligible for board certification, as well as postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Program duration: 12 months, beginning early July

Rotation duration: 5-week blocks except for a 6-week orientation period

Staffing requirements

Weekend distributive functions provide necessary training for the resident and are a requirement of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists (ASHP) residency accreditation standard. During the residency year, residents work in various areas in the department including IV admixtures, operations, and centralized and decentralized clinical coverage. The commitment is every other weekend.

Longitudinal experiences

• Various longitudinal projects such as a discharge counseling, quality improvement projects, outcomes-based research project, and medication use evaluations.

Teaching opportunities

• Residents have the option of participating in University of Houston College of Pharmacy's Teaching and Scholarship in Academia Program to earn a teaching certificate
• Residents co-precept students on clinical rotations

HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood offers a 24-month Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) residency program. Graduates of the program will receive a postgraduate year one (PGY1) and postgraduate year two (PGY2) certificate from HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood. Residents earn a Master of Science in Pharmacy Leadership & Administration from University of Houston College of Pharmacy.

Program duration: 24 months, beginning early July

Rotation duration: 5-week blocks except for a 6-week orientation period

Staffing requirements

Weekend distributive functions provide the necessary training for the resident and are a requirement of the ASHP residency accreditation standard. During the residency year, residents work in various areas in the department, including IV admixture, operations, and centralized and decentralized clinical coverage. Select weekdays off to offset staffing commitments.

• Every other weekend, PGY1
• Every third weekend, PGY2
• The annual service commitment includes two holiday days
• Manager on-call rotation

Management experiences

• Lead and plan Pharmacy Week experience for the department
• Manage as needed (PRN) technician employees, PGY1
• Manage area of preference, PGY2
• Manager-On-Call rotation, PGY2
• Chief Resident, PGY2
• Attend and participate in various weekly administrative meetings such as Pharmacy Leadership Meeting and Drug Shortage Meeting
• Lead Pharmacy Safety Huddle during Manager-On-Call rotation

Research opportunities

• PGY1 research project

Presentation requirements

• One seminar for technicians
• Residency research project platform presentation, PGY1 and PGY2
• Thesis defense presentation through University of Houston College of Pharmacy
• ACPE-accredited seminar to provide continuing education to technicians or pharmacists OR an accredited CE seminar to other healthcare providers
• Journal clubs, case presentations, and seminars as assigned per rotation requirements
• Three seminars for GME residents

Teaching opportunities

• Residents have the option of participating in the UHCOP’s Teaching and Scholarship in Academia Program to earn a teaching certificate
• Residents must obtain their preceptor license once eligible
• Residents’ co-precept students from UHCOP or University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy on administrative and clinical rotations, as appropriate
• Contribute to GME residency programs

Application Requirements

• Graduate from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy by the start of the residency year
• Be a licensed pharmacist in the state of Texas by Aug 31 of the program year
• Participate in the ASHP Resident Matching Program
  • NMS Match Code to be assigned
