Houston, Texas HCA Houston Healthcare Medical Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Sam Pena, MBA, BSN, as Chief Operating Officer, effective July 8, 2024. Pena brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role, having served in various positions at HCA Healthcare’s Corpus Christi Medical Center (CCMC) since joining HCA Healthcare in 2012. 

Throughout his career, Pena has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to delivering high-quality patient care. He has held positions such as Director of Patient Care Services, Vice President of Cardiovascular Services, and most recently, Vice President of Operations. In these roles, Pena oversaw a wide range of hospital services, including plant operations, dietary, environmental services, therapy services, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, catheterization lab and surgical services.

Pena's contributions to Corpus Christi Medical Center have been significant. He played a pivotal role in the success of the hospital's cardiovascular service line, executing strategic growth initiatives, improving operational efficiency and enhancing patient care. Pena's dedication to colleague and physician engagement was instrumental in fostering a positive work environment.

Beyond his professional achievements, Pena is deeply committed to his community. He served as an executive leader in the American Heart Association Corpus Chapter and is an active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division Young Professionals and Latino Colleague Networks.

Pena's earned his bachelor's degree in nursing from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi and holds a Master of Business Administration in healthcare administration. Additionally, Pena is a 2024 graduate of HCA Healthcare's prestigious Executive Development Program,a year-long, cohort-based program providing participants executive exposure, best-in-class curriculum, applied experience/projects, and peer networking to prepare them for an executive role.
