Meet our oncology nurse navigator
Valerie Patterson MSN, BSN, RN
Specialties: Breast and lung cancer
Valerie Patterson has been a licensed practical nurse for five years, a registered nurse for 29 years and an oncology nurse navigator for 11 years. As a nurse navigator, she spent six years working as a breast biopsy nurse helping patients navigate the biopsy process and has been an oncology nurse navigator for the last five years.
Valerie is no stranger to cancer. More than 30 years ago, she lost her mother-in-law to pancreatic cancer. The passing of her mother-in-law served as a pivotal moment in Valerie's life. Watching her battle the disease led Valerie to feel a strong calling to advocate for others facing similar challenges.
As an oncology nurse navigator, Valerie provides a holistic, patient-centered approach to care. Before she meets her patients, Valerie often calls them to introduce herself, provide emotional support and to help ease their anxiety they may feel from their recent diagnosis.
“I explain it may feel like they are in the middle of a storm right now and it’s hard to see down the road, but I’m here to help guide them and be a beacon of light,” Valerie says. “I ask them to tell me what they want me to know about themselves and what brings them joy. If someone wants me to pray with or for them, I do.”
Valerie works closely with her patients’ healthcare providers to ensure they receive the best care possible. She is always available to talk and to help them if there is a bump in the road preventing them from getting to the next stage of their care.
“Near the end of our call, I let them know that at some point we will meet so they can put a face to the name,” Valerie says. “They usually laugh and are happy to hear this and look forward to meeting their navigator.”
