GI related conditions

HCA Houston Southeast provides evaluation and treatment for gastrointestinal (GI) conditions.

Abdominal pain

Severe abdominal pain can signal a larger problem, such as a blockage in the small or large intestine or lack of blow flow to the organs in the belly. Other common causes for abdominal pain include inflammation of the appendix, gallbladder and pancreas. Symptoms can include:

  • Fever
  • Persistent, severe pain, tenderness or swelling in the upper, middle or lower part of the belly
  • Rigidity (when muscles in the belly are tense and board-like)
  • Guarding (involuntary contraction of the muscles in the belly)

Acid reflux (GERD)

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the backup of stomach acid and other contents into the esophagus. This causes heartburn, the main symptom of GERD.

If your doctor suspects GERD based on symptoms, they will conduct an endoscopy and/or biopsy. An endoscopy lets the doctor see the esophageal lining and what problems are present. A biopsy helps the doctor look for any changes in your cells to learn how to better find inflammation, cancer or other problems.

GERD is treated with a mixture of medicines and lifestyle changes.

Constipation

Constipation is when someone has fewer than three bowel movements in a week; the product is hard, dry and large; or it’s difficult to defecate. Constipation is not usually a serious problem, but common causes are:

  • Not consuming enough fiber or fluids
  • Too little exercise
  • Not fully emptying the bowel when defecating

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is used to describe chronic colon problems that occur in the absence of an identifiable medical cause. Common symptoms include:

  • Abdominal discomfort after meals
  • Excessive awareness of the presence of stool in the colon
  • Alternating diarrhea and constipation
  • Excess intestinal gas
  • Intestinal cramping
  • Uncomfortable bowel movements

Medical treatment options for IBS include increased dietary fiber, drugs that reduce bowel spasm and drugs to address constipation or diarrhea as needed.

Gastrointestinal cancers

Stomach cancer grows slowly and may not cause problems right away. Eventually, the cancer will grow into surrounding tissue and through the different layers of the stomach. Once cancer has grown, it will start to interfere with normal function and cause symptoms like indigestion, pain during swallowing or weight loss.

Types of stomach cancer include:

  • Adenocarcinomas
  • Lymphoma
  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST)
  • Carcinoid
