People recovering from surgery, injury or illness sometimes require extra therapy on their journey towards restored function and independence. At HCA Houston Healthcare West, we offer inpatient rehabilitation services in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and outpatient care in aquatic therapy.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy combines elements of education, exercise and pain management to assist patients in their return to maximum function and independence. Whether it's building muscle strength, learning new ways to move or relearning physical skills, our therapists specialize in:

  • Work-and sports-related injuries and accidents
  • Neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord and traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Arthritis
  • Lymphedema
  • Orthopedic injuries
  • Neck and back pain or limited movement
  • Balance deficits/vestibular disorders

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy develops, improves and assists patients in restoring their independence. Our goal is to provide patients with the skills they need to function in their chosen environment. Our therapists specialize in:

  • Neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord and traumatic brain injury (TBI)

  • Overuse and repetition-related injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Pain control and pain management for conditions such as reflex sympathetic dystrophy

Speech therapy

Speech therapy addresses communication and language skills, as well as cognitive and swallowing difficulties. Our therapists specialize in:

  • VitalStim for oropharyngeal dysphagia
  • Aphasia
  • Swallowing disorders
  • Modified barium swallow studies
  • Voice disorders and voice cord nodules
  • Post-radiation of head and neck cancers
  • Neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord and traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Communication difficulties following stroke, head injury and surgery
  • Cognitive impairment

Aquatic therapy

Aquatic therapy is a natural alternative to traditional land-based rehabilitations that some people may find difficult or painful. Also known as water therapy, its benefits include:

  • Buoyancy – water counters the effects of gravity, reducing joint pain and easing movement of arms and legs
  • Sensory input – water gently stimulates the entire body
  • Resistance – light turbulence generated by the patient builds strength, increases endurance and improves balance
  • Compression – water decreases swelling by naturally compressing arms and legs
  • Aquatic therapy takes place at the Dad's Club Swim Team, 1006 Voss Road, Houston, Texas 77055, where West Houston Medical Center aquatic therapists specialize in:

Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility

Our Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility offers a multidisciplinary approach through a dedicated and highly-experienced team of occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, nurses, social workers and nutritionists. To be eligible, a patient must:

  • Have a written referral from a physician
  • Require at least two disciplines of therapy (physical, occupational and/or speech)
  • Require 24/7 nursing care
  • Be medically stable
  • Have potential for improvement in function and/or mobility
  • Be able to tolerate three hours of intensive therapy each day
