Cystoscopy (examination of the bladder)

This procedure allows the doctor to examine the bladder with a lighted scope, which allows the doctor to look through the urethra and into the bladder. This procedure may be conducted when someone is experiencing repeated UTIs, blood in the urine, incontinence, frequent urination, or pain or difficulty during urination. It can diagnose some abnormalities, such as:

  • Narrowing of the urethra
  • Enlargement of the prostate gland in men
  • Tumors or cysts
  • Bladder stones
  • Polyps
  • Inflammation
  • Pouches and ulcers on the bladder wall

Cystectomy (removal of the bladder)

The purpose of this procedure is to remove the bladder and create a urinary diversion – a new way for your body to store and eliminate urine. A cystectomy is performed to treat bladder cancer that is treat invasive or recurrent noninvasive.

Nephrectomy (removal of the kidney)

This procedure is conducted when the whole kidney needs to be removed or only the diseased part. Kidney removal may be necessary due to birth defects, kidney cancer, infection or injury to the kidney, or kidney donation for a transplant.

Prostatectomy (removal of the prostate)

This surgery involves the full or partial removal of the prostate gland. It may be done to remove a non-cancerous, enlarged prostate to help with urine flow. It is also done to remove the prostate gland containing cancer.

Kidney stones

Urogynecology is a subspecialty that is a combination of urology and gynecology. Urogynecology focuses on the urologic needs of women and often focuses on pelvic floor disorders and urinary incontinence. Women may require urogynecologic care due to aging, childbirth, obesity or a physical strain.

Often, physical therapy may be a treatment options for strengthening the pelvic floor. In other cases, surgery may be required.
